About Tsunu Extra Strong Rapé (Hapé)
Tsunu Extra Strong is one of our best-selling blends and the strongest tier of the Katukina tradition. The effect is immediate — "a nice bite that clears the senses and grounds you in a moment; the meditation that follows is deepened by the vibration of the Hapé and the beating of your heart." Its spicy, floral, earthy aroma carries a warm vanilla sweetness from the honey, fostering deep introspection — ideal for evening ceremonial use, as the Katukina themselves favour it. A favourite among experienced practitioners, best taken sparingly: expect a slow build into a stillness that stays long after the initial contact.
The Katukina call it Romo Poto Roapa. It is made from two things, and time. The tobacco — tabaco de corda, the strong rope-cured leaf — is soaked for months in plant sap and wild bee honey, until it turns completely black and concentrated. That is where the strength comes from: not from an additive, but from the waiting. The ash is Tsunu (Platycyamus regnellii), burned from wood already fallen — “Não cortamos madeira viva pra queimar.” We do not cut living wood to burn. The whole is then dried, pounded in a wooden pilão and finely sieved by hand, in small batches.
