About Catuaba Rapé (Hapé)

This light blend, crafted by the Katukina tribe of Acre, Brazil, combines tobacco from tribal lands with Catuaba — a celebrated Amazonian plant whose Tupi-Guarani name is traditionally rendered as mata que dá força: the forest that gives strength. Catuaba is known across indigenous communities of Brazil as a plant of vitality and love — warming, tonic, and enlivening in character.

The Katukina work with two catuabas, and both go into this rapé. From the large tree, the fallen wood is burned to ash. And from the ground comes batata catuaba — the catuaba tuber — which is dried, taken to the pilão and pounded, then worked into the ash. It is a blend of the tree and the root of the same medicine, and it carries no Tsunu: catuaba stands here on its own.

As a rapé, Catuaba is gentle and calming — purposeful in effect without being forceful. Practitioners describe it as a good evening blend, settling the mind and supporting a quiet, centred presence. In traditional practice it is associated with the rekindling of inner fire: a warmth that is both grounding and enlivening.
