What Is Copaiba Oil? Oil, Oleoresin or Essential Oil?

The oily substance obtained when a copaiba tree is tapped is properly called an oleoresin — a natural mixture of essential oils and resin. The "resin" is the thicker, more viscous part; the essential oil is the volatile, aromatic component that can later be distilled out. Throughout this guide, "copaiba oil" means this whole, unprocessed oleoresin.

Traditionally, the extracted oleoresin is simply filtered and bottled, ready for use. Commercial producers, by contrast, generally age and harden the oleoresin into a balsam, which is then processed to extract copaiba balsam essential oil. The two products look, smell and behave differently — which is why the distinction matters when you buy.

History

Four Centuries of Copaiba

Copaiba has travelled the world for four hundred years. Jesuit missionaries carried it back to Europe, where it was recorded by 1625 and became known as "Jesuit's balsam," and it remained listed in the United States Pharmacopeia from 1820 to 1910. Today the Brazilian Amazon still supplies most of the world's copaiba, and the oleoresin accounts for roughly 95% of Brazil's oil-resin production — a living tradition with deep economic and cultural roots.

These are traditional uses passed on orally, not clinically evaluated treatments, and they are best understood as part of a living cultural practice.

What's Actually in Copaiba Oil

Copaiba oleoresin is a sesquiterpene-rich oil whose most discussed constituent is beta-caryophyllene (BCP). A 2018 phytochemistry review in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences found beta-caryophyllene is usually the dominant compound in copaiba, with reported levels ranging widely by species — from roughly a third of the oil in some Copaifera species to well over half in others — alongside a family of active diterpene acids such as copalic and kaurenoic acid.2 The aging process behind balsam essential oil shifts this balance, which is one real reason the traditional oil and the essential oil behave as different products — and why the species, source and processing of a copaiba oil matter as much as the name on the label.

What Does the Research Say?

Copaiba has drawn real scientific interest — but it's worth being clear about what that research shows and what it doesn't. Most of the strongest findings are for isolated beta-caryophyllene, often in laboratory or animal studies rather than human trials, and copaiba is not an approved treatment for any condition. With that framing, here is what the published literature actually reports.

Beta-caryophyllene acts on the body's CB2 receptor. A landmark 2008 study in PNAS showed that beta-caryophyllene selectively activates the CB2 cannabinoid receptor — part of the body's endocannabinoid system — while leaving the CB1 receptor (the one linked to cannabis's psychoactive effects) untouched. In the same study, oral beta-caryophyllene reduced inflammation in mice, an effect that disappeared in animals lacking the CB2 receptor.1 This is why beta-caryophyllene is often described as a "dietary cannabinoid" that is non-psychoactive.

Anti-inflammatory activity — in laboratory and animal models. Building on that mechanism, a 2018 study in the Journal of Cellular Biochemistry found that beta-caryophyllene, described as copaiba's major constituent, lowered systemic inflammation and oxidative-stress markers in an arthritis model in rats.3 These are animal findings with an isolated compound, not proof of a clinical effect in people — but they are a genuine, repeatable basis for the plant's long anti-inflammatory reputation.

Antibacterial activity against oral bacteria — in the lab. A 2018 systematic review in Phytotherapy Research gathered eleven laboratory studies and concluded that copaiba oil showed antibacterial effects against common oral bacteria in vitro — while noting the effect was generally weaker than chlorhexidine (a standard antiseptic) and calling for better-quality trials.4 A separate 2018 study confirmed that copaiba oleoresin and its isolated diterpenes inhibited oral pathogens in the lab.5

Skin and wound research — early and animal-based. A 2022 study in Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity reported that topical beta-caryophyllene supported faster re-epithelialisation (the skin re-covering a wound) with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in a rat skin-wound model.6 Promising for a topical oil, but again animal work with the isolated compound.

Human evidence is genuinely limited. It's only fair to say the honest part plainly: rigorous human trials on copaiba are almost non-existent. The clearest one we could find — a small 21-day randomised controlled trial of a 10% copaiba gel for gum health — did not show a benefit over placebo.7 Much of copaiba's reputation rests on centuries of traditional use plus laboratory and animal science; the human clinical picture is still mostly unwritten.

How to Use Copaiba Oil at Home

  1. On the skin: Smooth the pure oleoresin directly onto skin — no carrier oil needed — wherever soothing or toning is wanted. For the concentrated essential oil, always dilute first (see Safety below) and patch-test.
  2. In massage: Work a small amount into muscles and joints after exertion, on its own or blended with a carrier oil for longer glide.
  3. In the bath: Add a few drops to warm bathwater for a fragrant, skin-softening soak.
  4. In skincare blends: Add a drop or two to facial cleansers, creams or toners as a traditional complexion oil.
  5. Aromatically: Inhale directly from the bottle, diffuse, or use in steam for its calming woody-sweet scent. It blends well with citrus, floral, spice, woodsy and minty oils.
  6. In natural perfumery: Use the balsam or essential oil as a fixative base note in soaps, perfumes and fragrances.

Can Copaiba Oil Be Used for Pets?

With caution, and only under the guidance of a veterinarian or a professional versed in animal aromatherapy. Some animals — cats especially — are highly sensitive to essential oils because their metabolism differs from ours. Where copaiba is used with dogs, it is traditionally well diluted and applied where the animal can't easily lick it off, often around comfort in normal aging and activity. Not all essential oils are safe for pets, and safe use depends on the oil, the dose and the species — so ask a professional first, every time.

Used sensibly, pure copaiba oleoresin is a gentle oil — but a few rules keep it that way:

  • The essential oil is concentrated — always dilute it in a carrier oil such as jojoba, almond, avocado or grapeseed (a common guideline is three to five drops per ounce of carrier) and patch-test before wider use; the traditional oleoresin can be used directly on skin.
  • Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Do not use copaiba oil of any kind if pregnant or nursing.
  • Toxicology reviews report low acute toxicity for copaiba oil in animal studies, but this is not the same as proven safety in every situation.8 This guide is about topical and aromatic use; we don't recommend taking copaiba internally without professional guidance.
  • As with any botanical, if you have an ongoing medical condition, take prescription medication, or are unsure, talk to your doctor first. Buy from a reputable source, and store your oils in a cool, dark place away from children and pets.
